Happy First Birthday Pie

Dear Persephone,

Happy First Birthday my love! You have been one of the best blessings of our lives. Always so sweet, even tempered, playful and silly.

I remember the day we found out about you, on father’s day last year. What a BIG surprise that was! Those nine months were extremely hard, but I would go through it again tenfold. You were the rainbow at the end, my “Rainbow” baby.

In the beginning I didn’t believe you were a girl. I was so used to being a “boy mom” and I was convinced you were a boy and the ultrasound tech got it all wrong. We had to go back two more times just so I could be 100% sure. And yes, you were a beautiful, healthy, baby girl.

The first three months of your life were special yet a haze. I would have to set an alarm for myself to wake you up for your feedings because you would insist on sleeping. But sometimes you would prefer to wake up multiple times a night and it was hard, but we got through it.

You began to sleep soundly through the night around 3-4 months. You were so sweet and wonderful that you wouldn’t make a sound, and I would constantly go check to make sure you were breathing. How could a baby be THIS chill??

Daddy says you took after me, always pleasant, relaxed and happy. We even sometimes dress you in the clothes I wore when I was your age, and you literally become a mini-me!

Your first word was daddy and your second word mommy. You are such a daddy’s girl! You love to eat all kinds of food and your favorite is burgers. You enjoy our weekly Costco trips and it’s your job to inspect anything and everything that goes into the cart. People marvel at your long thick hair and your big doe eyes and often stop to talk to you. You charm everyone by laughing, smiling and clapping for them. You love interacting with people, especially your brothers, who often give you hugs and kisses and adore you. They make you laugh all throughout car journeys and you copy whatever words they are saying. Then you belly laugh and I die because it’s the cutest thing in the world.

I do not want to treat you any differently than I do the boys. If you want to play in the mud and with dinosaurs, I’m all for it. I also have the same expectations from you. I expect great things from you, and with that comes hard work and discipline, and sometimes doing things you may not want to do. You need to work even harder in this world if you want to go far, and go far you will. I know it in my heart.

My beautiful daughter. I still can’t believe I have a daughter. It has been one of the biggest and best blessings of our lives. You make our family complete. We love you to the moon and back. Happy first birthday my love.

Love, Mom and Dad
