Happy First Birthday Caspian

Dear Caspian,

Happy first birthday, my baby boy! Today is your day; a special celebration of you. We are so lucky to have the privilege of calling you our son. A year ago today I could have not imagined the sweet, funny, spunky, excitable curly haired little boy you have become. I could have never imagined how beautiful you are. I could never have envisioned how happy you make me. I could have never have thought how well you would get along with your older brother. It sends tears to my eyes watching the two of you interact daily with such love and devotion toward each other.

You have been such a sweet, pleasant little boy. You have consistently slept a full night’s sleep in your crib since you were three months old. You weren’t always this way though. During your first month in this world, you were a very angry baby. Your nickname was “Angry bird” because you always made angry faces and you had a high pitched cry that sounded like a bird. You were the cutest angry bird. We often joked that you were plotting to take over the world, as in some ways you looked like a little dictator.

Because you are so cute and funny, we have conjured up a bunch of little nicknames for you like “Bobby” (after bibidi bobbidy boop) and “Dowsi” (after your middle name, Ferdowsi) and “Dynamic Dowsi” and sometimes we will call you Caspian Sea.

But there was a reason you were so angry, you had pyloric stenosis and had to have surgery when you were just a few weeks old. I was amazed at your resilience and bravery. You were a tiny newborn being poked and prodded, cut open and stitched back up, and yet you persevered and came out smiling and stronger.

Your favorite thing in the world is to play with your dog, Sir Edward. You crawl at the speed of light to try to catch him, and he plays with you like he is a predator and you are his prey. He will then run around you in circles and you will giggle until your face turns red and until you run out of breath. Your second favorite thing in the world is to boop everyone on the nose. I’m not sure if this nose infatuation was learned from your brother or not, but it is pretty hilarious when you constantly poke at any nose that comes your way, especially mine whenever I’m feeding you. You and your cute little index finger, always pointing and poking. You silly baby.

You spend your days at home playing with mommy, daddy, Valentino and Sir Edward. In the evenings you enjoy spending time with daddy bonding while mommy is cooking. You wrestle with daddy and always come out the winner! Your first word was daddy, and you constantly say it. You love to say daddy over and over again when you get excited. It’s just the cutest thing ever. You love to be read to, and you pay attention so carefully to what the books have to say. You get over excited every time I turn the page and you start waving your hands in the air and raising your eyebrows in astonishment. You also love chomping on your crib. Every morning when I come to greet you I find you sitting there smiling at me with white wood chips all over your face and your 6 little teeth grinding on the wood. You naughty little boy.

Sometimes you accompany mommy or daddy to pick up or drop off Valentino at school, and you have even made friends with Valentino’s classmates and teachers. You have such a dynamic personality and you are so friendly and playful toward other children. Everyone loves you, but no one as much as me. You are the light of my life.

Every day you are reaching new milestones and learning new things. We celebrate with you and encourage you in all your new adventures. I attempt to capture all these wonderful moments with you in writing and pictures, so eager to document them for a lifetime to remember.

Happy Birthday my love. I am so proud of you and I will always be your biggest fan. I have big dreams and wishes for you. Always follow your heart and be the best person that you can be. I look forward to spending a life filled with love, laughter and soaking up all the special moments with you.

We love you so much,

Mom & Dad
