Adjusting to Life in Northern California

We have been adjusting to our big move to California, and it’s been amazing.

Every day we are getting more settled, figuring out our new routines and structures. We enrolled the boys into a Mandarin immersion Montessori school that is run by a no nonsense Chinese woman who is strict and has staff with similar values. I’m also surrounded by tiger moms who have little genius children that literally make me a little embarrassed by my own standards for my kids.

The boys really like their school and they come home every day singing Chinese songs, and I have no idea what they are singing but I’m all for it. To foster their second language learning I sometimes play peppa pig for them in Chinese (on youtube) and in the car they listen to Chinese music. It’s hilarious.

We have also joined a gym and have been going every weekend. Valentino and Pie love to swim in the outdoor pool. Caspian not so much. He doesn’t like water and is afraid of swimming. I have a lot of work to do on that end too….because he WILL learn and he WILL love it!!!!!

When we go to the gym on the weekends we don’t actually work out….this is silly but we never have time to work out. Our routine consists of taking the kids swimming, showers, and then putting them in the gym daycare for a bit so that me and hubby can have meetings. Because during the week we are both so busy that we rarely even have time to talk to each other, so i write a long list of things we need to discuss and plan, and at the gym while the kids are in daycare is the perfect time to have our discussions.

When we become more settled and free up some time for working out, my plan is for us to start weight lifting. I don’t know why keto and weight lifting just go together really well. Cardio has never done anything for me in the past.

Anyways, how cute is Pie?

The kids are kept so busy with their school and gym routine that it leaves little time for much else. I would like to take them into the city more and explore other areas around here, but it always seems like there is just too little time to do anything!

We are still working on putting the house together, and we have a long ways to go. It’s taking us a while to put everything together as we moved here with literally nothing. We did buy a couch, dining table and chairs and beds though, and I am just LOVING having new furniture.

I’m also trying to embrace the minimalist lifestyle, although this proves more difficult with kids. I am making a big effort not to buy things I don’t need. As we downsized from a 4 bedroom house in Virginia with a basement, to a three bedroom house with no basement, I don’t have much room for storage and I don’t want to clutter my garage.

I feel like our family is doing really well adjusting to a smaller house too. The boys love sharing a bedroom and I love not having to spend hours cleaning a big house. I don’t want a big house, with space that I don’t use, just to store crap that I don’t need. I never understand those people who fill their garage with clutter and keep their cars (which cost way more than the clutter they are storing) outside! Anyways enough of my rant….. here’s a fun video I put together:
